Means Test
Since BAPCPA (Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act) took effect, everyone interested in filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy must pass a test of means (financial ability). The means test requires filers to compare their income with that of other families of equal size in their area. This calculation is based on Official Form 22A and applies the official formula stated in federal law (11 U.S.C. 707(b) and local expense standards published by the U.S. government.
